Why are Sunshine and Vitamin D3 so Important?
We need vitamin D in the routine biochemical functions of the body. Without it the body can not access the information stored in the DNA and none of the body systems work optimally. Vitamin D3 is the key that unlock the DNA library. It it's also vital for absorption of calcium from diet. As an enabler and not a causation of the absorption, excess vitamin D3 does not cause increased absorption of calcium above the threshold the body needs. K2 vitamin is essential in transporting the calcium from the blood to where it is needed and should be taken separately from vitamin D3.
Forms of Vitamin D
Vitamin D exists in two chemically distinct forms.; D3 and D2. Vitamin D2 comes from plants and mushrooms and D3 is the form human skin makes when exposed to sunlight. Vitamin D3 is necessary for all tissues to function optimally. The half life of D3 vitamin in blood is 24 hours. On average people in developed countries get 2000IU of vitamin D3 per day, which is a lot more than was though before, but the reality according to recent research is, we need even more than that. The estimate is we need 4000 to 6000 IU daily to prevent a development of chronic diseases and break down of body systems. Studies show corresponding higher mortality rates with lower levels of vitamin D3. All studies show most of the world population is deficient of vitamin D3.
Deficiency of Vitamin D3 consequences on world population are as follows;
- Increase in bone diseases, fractures and falls.
- high blood pressure
- diabetes and metabolic syndrome
- increased risk of heart diseases and death
- many cancers
- MS
- decreased infection resistance
- premature births and low birth weight
- increased risk of Cesarean births
- periodontal disease
- increased risk of Schizophrenia
How Much Vitamin D3 Do We Actually Need?
Experts disagree about the optimum serum level of vitamin D3. Most agree the value should be greater than 40 ng/mL. Commonly people working outside on summer months have values between 60 and 80 ng/mL. Health is more that the absence of disease. To achieve optimal health the recommended daily intake may not be enough. Also the co-nutrient intake must be adequate. Elderly, pregnant and lactating mothers, chronically ill, and people working mainly indoors have an increased need for vitamin D3 supplementation. For example, studies estimate lactating mothers need 6000 IU of vitamin D3 per day.
Vitamin D3 toxicity
15 studies show no toxicity reported of intake below 30.000 IU per day, and no toxicity from blood serum values under 200ng/mL. America's geriatric society recommend intake of 4000 IU per day for individuals aged 51 to 70.
